Donald Trump has been President of the United States for just over a month, promising plenty of improvements to the nation’s economy and industry along the way. It remains to be seen if Trump’s promises will have an impact on the trucking industry, but Chris Spear, the President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), believes they will.
During his opening address at the Omnitracs Outlook 2017 conference, Spear expressed a positive outlook on President Trump, telling the audience that the new administrations will ultimately usher in new improvements to for the industry as a whole.

Discussing Trump, Spear stated that, “He’s going to create an environment that empowers all of us to step up, to lead, not follow and provide an opportunity to help him achieve those lofty goals,” further noting, “It’s our obligation and our responsibility to step up and do something.”
Spear specifically cited Trump’s proposal of using $1 trillion for infrastructure improvements across the nation, which would no doubt help the lucrative long-distance trucking market. The President has yet to reveal details behind his proposal, though that doesn’t worry Spear.

“As he takes more time to provide that detail, we need to be a part of that dialogue,” said Spear, who further stated that Trump’s motivation extends beyond the trucking industry. Such monumental infrastructure improvements would be a boon to trucking companies, but would also promote the American economy overall while providing plenty of jobs along the way.
But for Spear, everything naturally comes back to trucking. He sees the industry as an important player in Washington’s potential infrastructure spending. As spears put it, “We’re the catalyst for all of that. Our story resonates better than probably anybody else’s in Washington.”
Will President Trump Help the Trucking Industry?
Though his first month in office has been mired in controversy, there is potential for Trump and his administration to help the trucking industry. The President has frequently promised to eliminate regulations that some believe hinder business growth. Such rollback on regulations could see rapid growth within various industries, with truckers ready to help facilitate such growth.
And as Spear noted, infrastructure improvements would almost guarantee growth in the trucking sector. With better roads and highways, truckers will be able to travel faster and more efficiently, allowing them to hit the road more often with less obstacles along the way.
