DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing

Comprehensive DOT drug testing is a vital part of every transportation company’s DOT drug and alcohol compliance program, and all drivers or employers of drivers with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are required by law to follow specific drug testing procedures set by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA). DOT drug testing rules govern what types of drugs drivers should be tested for, when and how often tests should be administered, what facilities can actually perform a DOT-approved drug test, the components of a trucking company’s Drug Free Workplace program, and more.

DOT-Required Drug Testing

In addition to enrolling in a drug testing consortium program, all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers must complete the following drug tests to remain DOT compliant:

Pre Employment Drug Testing

Before operating a vehicle that requires a Commercial Driver’s License, all owner operators or employees must complete a pre employment drug test and return negative results.

Depending on the type of accident and the injuries sustained by those involved, drivers may be asked to take an immediate drug and alcohol tests to determine individual liability.

Random Drug Testing

To remain DOT compliant, both owner operators and employees of transportation companies must join a consortium pool and submit for random drug tests throughout the year.

Reasonable Suspicion

If an employer has reason to suspect an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace, the employee in question may be asked to take a drug or alcohol test.

If a driver has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, he or she must first return a negative result on a “return-to-duty” drug test before resuming workplace responsibilities.

Follow Up

Drivers that have successfully completed the return-to-duty process (including a negative return-to-duty test) must be tested several times over the course of the following year.

What Happens After a Drug Test?

Whether drug test results are positive or negative, Consortium Pool is careful to protect client confidentiality and results are always sent through proper channels to maintain discretion. If tests return a positive result, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the employee to determine if any medical reasons may have affected the test, such as taking prescription medication; if no acceptable reason is found, the employee should be removed from performing safety-sensitive duties and management should consult the Consortium Pool Drug and Alcohol Policy program policy to determine the next steps.
