Drug Testing Required For Owner Operators

In order for owner operators to stay DOT compliant, it’s vital that they submit to a number of drug tests each year. That’s part of why you join a consortium like us. Our programs get you into a pool for random drug testing as well as provide you with access to over 12,000 drug and alcohol testing locations to choose from.

Here are the types of required drug testing for owner operators:

Pre-Employment Testing

Owner operators must submit to pre-employment drug testing before performing any safety-sensitive duties and need a verified negative test result. Pre-employment testing ensures companies hire the right person.

Random Testing

As an owner operator you’re placed into a pool of drivers when joining a drug-testing consortium. Each year a percentage of that pool gets randomly tested to ensure ongoing DOT compliance and safety.

Post-Accident Test

Owner operators require a post-accident drug test if the accident results in loss of human life, injury to someone who receives treatment away from the scene, and damage to vehicles requiring towing.

Reasonable Suspicion Test

Owner operators are less likely to receive reasonable suspicion drug testing but it’s possible. This occurs when a trained employee or supervisor observes behaviors that are likely to be caused by substance abuse.

Return-To-Duty Test

If an owner operator has had a drug or alcohol violation they must submit to return-to-duty drug testing before they can perform safety-sensitive. This test is usually preceded by a meeting with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)

Follow Up Test

After you have completed the return-to-duty process, an owner operator must complete follow-up drug tests. The amount of tests and how long you must test for varies from companies as well as SAP recommendations.
